Weekly hours: 5 hours a week (working pattern to be discussed with Employer)
Main Duties:
We are looking for a creative and motivated person to work with a 10-year-old with a condition called Cerebral Palsy. The Personal Assistant and Advocate’s main role is to support him 5 hours per week accessing activities meaningful for him and put his needs first. He is delayed in his speech and can walk using a frame and self-propels his wheelchair himself.
This is a flexible role which can offer consistent weekly hours from 3pm weekdays & weekends, to suit both candidate and family.
We are looking for people who are interested in physical disability & communication processes.
Key Responsibilities
• To act as a safe person that he will feel comfortable and confident with to enjoy exploring new places, such as parks, swimming, riding his adapted bike & picnics.
• Personal care including toileting.
• Manual handling including transferring into his wheelchair or walking frame & fitting splints.
• Assisting him to be independent wherever possible. Supporting and enabling, not doing for.
• Enabling him to access meaningful activities every day; these include but are not limited to sensory exploration, communication sessions, music sessions and intensive interaction etc.
• Ensuring that his personal care needs are priority at all times, including during activities. He should always have access to suitable facilities such as a changing places toilet
Person Specification - Education/Qualifications
• No qualifications are essential as we employ on a values-based recruitment model.
It would be useful to have some training in the following:
• Manual handling
• Disability
• Administering medication
Experience
• No experience is essential as we employ on a values-based recruitment model.
• It would be useful to have some experience in the following:
• Experience of working with individuals with high support needs.
• Experience of undertaking personal care duties.
Skills and Abilities
• Ability to communicate confidently and sensitively with a variety of people.
• Ability to advocate and represent the views/needs of child whenever appropriate.
• Ability to be present in the moment and connect with child as part of meaningful communication.
Values and Knowledge
• Commitment to equality and diversity and specifically to promoting access for and inclusion of people with disabilities.
• Comfortable carrying out personal care tasks.
• Commitment to further developing his skills, particularly his mobility & speech.
Enhanced DBS check required.
