Rate of Pay: NMW (national minimum wage at £12.71)

Job Purpose

To assist with a variety of tasks that will enable Person F to live her personal and social life according to her wishes and interests. This role involves daily support.

About the Employer

The employer is Person F’s sister, who is organising daily support.

Person F is a 54-year-old lady who is deaf, partially sighted, has diabetes and is currently having kidney dialysis three days a week. Person F lives with her husband and requires daily support to manage her diabetes and renal medication.

Social Duties

This section outlines the social, health-related, domestic, and wellbeing duties required to support Person F to maintain independence, safety, health, and social engagement.

Medication & Health Management

- Organising medication and supporting Person F to ensure that no medication doses are missed.

- Checking medication stock and ensuring adequate supply for the coming weeks.

- Changing the Dexcom sensor used for monitoring diabetes when required.

Hearing Support

- Ensuring that Person F’s hearing aid is working correctly.

- Accompanying Person F to the hearing centre if the hearing aid is not working or requires adjustment.

Physical Activity & Mobility

- Encouraging and supporting Person F to understand and complete prescribed walking-steadiness exercises.

- Organising and accompanying Person F to weekly physical activities, including walking, swimming, and visits to the local gym.

Social Connection & Mental Stimulation

- Supporting Person F to stay in touch with family and maintain regular social contact.

- Arranging and accompanying Person F on occasional leisure outings, including ten-pin bowling, crazy golf, and trips to the cinema.

- Taking part in mentally stimulating activities with Person F, such as Scrabble, card games, and jigsaw puzzles.

Domestic Duties

- Daily checks to ensure pathways between the sofa, dining table, downstairs bathroom, and kitchen are clear of obstacles.

- Daily checking and cleaning, when necessary, of Person F’s personal bathroom and the downstairs bathroom.

- Weekly changing of bedding.

- Supporting Person F to manage laundry and clothing care.

- Preparing and ensuring that a daily nutritious meal is available for Person F to reheat safely in the microwave.

Personal Care

Person F is generally independent with personal care tasks such as showering, using the toilet, and dressing. However, she requires occasional support to ensure these tasks are completed safely, especially due to reduced balance and her use of a walking stick.

Support may also be needed to ensure that her bathroom and the downstairs bathroom remain clean, safe, and hygienic.

Person F prefers to manage her own laundry, but she requires support with hanging clothing to dry, ensuring items are fully dry before being put away, and assistance with heavier or awkward items.

To maintain mobility and reduce her risk of falls, Person F needs to complete daily walking-steadiness and stretching exercises. She requires support and encouragement to carry these out safely and consistently.

Safeguarding Duties

The Personal Assistant (PA) has an important responsibility in helping to always ensure Person F’s safety and wellbeing. The PA must:

- Promote Person F’s safety, dignity, and rights in all aspects of care and support.

- Be alert to any signs of abuse, neglect, or changes in Person F’s physical or emotional wellbeing.

- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the employer (Person F’s sister).

- Follow safeguarding procedures explained during induction, including what to do if Person F is at immediate risk.

- Maintain professional boundaries and ensure confidentiality.

- Support safe decision-making and act in Person F’s best interests where appropriate.

- Ensure the home environment is safe, reporting hazards such as trip risks, equipment faults, or hygiene concerns.

- Use respectful communication, considering Person F’s deafness, partial sight, and health conditions.

Hours of Work – 14 hours per week

Monday: 6pm to 8pm

Tuesday: 5pm to 7pm

Wednesday: 6pm to 8pm

Thursday: 5pm to 7pm

Friday: 6pm to 8pm

Saturday: 5pm to 7pm

Sunday: by arrangement

Rate of Pay

PAYE rate of pay is £12.71 per hour.

For self-employed applicants a UTR will be required and the rate £14.06 per hour.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- DBS

- Driving licence

- Car and appropriate insurance

- Awareness of Muslim culture

- Able to swim

- Confidentiality

- Ability to build positive relationships

Preferred:

- Patient and understanding

- Thorough and able to support a routine

- Good listener, able to recognise signs of stress

- Ability to motivate someone who may be reluctant to exercise
